Ross Brown: Reminiscing

Started in the 4th grade around 1950, aged 15, along with philosophical Des Higgins, Russel Fergus, Harry Thompson, Gordon Roberts, Trevor Kerr, Ron Muir, Fred Rice. At one stage there was a 3rd grade Colts side, coached by the genial Ernie Gasson and captained by the stalwart Noel Coulter. I went up the grades for a full season in 2nd A - distressingly a team of many senior players drinking gallons of beer at lunch and younger players then toiling to save the image of the club.

Had a couple of games for the seniors, captained by Dennis O'Malley, with Jack Moorehead, Alan Pearce. Have The Press copy of the match against Old Collegians (with Tony MacGibbon) at Elmwood Park in 1955. Old Collegians made 236. NVBurt took 4 for 54, self 1 for 49. Our first innings reads: GFraser 4, ARBurgess 1, DBO'Malley 2, FRice 7, DMcKnight 1, BSalt 2, KButler 4, NVBurtt not out 5, RBrown 5, APearce absent, NVBennett absent, extras 6, total 37. On the second day we were pulverised before lunch.

In Scotland 1956 I played for Leith Albion in Edinburgh, then the 1957 season with Sydenham in South London, taking 76 wickets for 739 runs.

After that no more cricket, or rugby (played for Sydenham seniors in 1955 then clubs in London) ... just sailing, marathon running (20 completed) and mountain-hiking. (Cricket is still called a Foreign Migrant sport by the media in Norway, yet there are now 40 clubs, largely of Pakistani players).
